Bowness - The Old Court House

The Old Court House was built in 1843 to serve as Magistrates Court, Police Station and village jail. Any miscreant who overindulged in the local ale was thrown into the cells and dealt with by the Magistrates when he'd sobered up. These days, The Old Court House serves as an excellent bed and breakfast house and the standard of accommodation has improved immeasurably. The atmosphere is bright and cheerful and the house is stylishly decorated. Bedrooms are all en-suite with modern accessories and some have handsome four-poster beds. Breakfast is taken in the attractive dining room, which provides a hearty full English together with fruit and cereals, with a vegetarian alternative if required. The Old Court House is very conveniently located in the centre of Bowness, just a few minutes from Lake Windermere and nearby a variety of restaurants and pubs.

Bowness - Laurel Cottage

You would never guess that Laurel Cottage, built in 1613, was originally the old village school. It is certainly an education to see how well it has been transformed into a most comfortable bed and breakfast guesthouse, yet retaining the original historical features. The bedrooms, mostly en-suite, are individually and tastefully decorated in a bright and cheerful style, and Four Posters are available. The finest feature of the house is the original oak-beamed dining room where breakfast is served. Hosts, Syma and John, serve the traditional "Westmorland breakfast", similar to the full English but with additional local fare, with a vegetarian alternative available. Syma and John are very welcoming and families should note that Laurel Cottage is child friendly with a reduced tariff for children.

Hawkshead - Ann Tyson's House

The eponymous Ann Tyson was landlady to William Wordsworth who lodged at her house as a boy while he attended the local grammar school, in or about the 1780s. Now her historic, Grade 2 listed, cottage has been transformed into a modern bed and breakfast guesthouse with all the facilities you would expect from a progressive establishment. There is a wide range of rooms, varying from those with full en-suite facilities to family rooms and single rooms. Some rooms are located on the ground floor for the benefit of the less-able. Families will be pleased to note that children are made welcome, and dogs too. We are told that one of the rooms contains the antique bed once owned by the nineteenth century writer, John Ruskin, who lived nearby. Like many of the houses in this part of the world, Latimer House was built in the Victorian period to provide elegance and space in a comfortable garden environment. All of these qualities remain firmly in place now that Latimer House serves as guest accommodation. Indeed, the success with which the owners, Mike and Sandy, have updated this property is shown in the English Tourist Board's accolade of Four Diamonds. This means you can be assured of every comfort and convenience during your stay, down to residents' parking, a wide choice of tastefully decorated rooms all maintained to a high standard, a beautiful garden to relax in, and a convenient location close to the shops, cinema and attractions of Bowness and Windermere. What's even better is that you get your breakfast - the high quality full English or something lighter to suit your taste - served in your room each morning! Now that's a special touch of luxury!

Ambleside - Brathay Lodge

Brathay Lodge is a truly delightful property built around 1890 and totally refurbished in a contemporary style which sets it apart from the majority of accommodation in the area. The atmosphere combines relaxed informality with quality accommodation, the standards of which equal those expected in a prestigious hotel. The staff are very welcoming and will make sure that your needs are respected - whether you want to enjoy a quiet time or a more social one, you can be sure of a highly enjoyable stay at Brathay Lodge. We were especially impressed by the bedrooms, all of which are equipped with that most essential feature - king sized beds! Decorated in contemporary style to a very high standard, these rooms offer exceptional standards of comfort and elegance. There are several rooms available with wooden floors which are suitable for those of you who wish to take a pet along, and there is a specially reserved outdoor area for smokers to enjoy their pleasure!
The thought and care which has gone into all aspects of the refurbishment of Brathay Lodge is very apparent even on the website, which has facilities for online booking. This attention to detail continues all the way through from the moment you arrive to the time of your departure, ensuring that whatever the purpose of your visit to the Lakes, it will be enhanced by the wonderful accommodation on offer at Brathay Lodge.
There is a large private off-road car park which lets you enjoy the many local walks during the day; for your evening meal there is an abundance of excellent restaurants in the area. Finally, for those who prefer their Lakes pastimes wet and muddy (and even for those who don't!) there are drying facilities to ensure you have a comfortable trip. A superb buffet breakfast, free wireless internet access, and membership of the Langdale Leisure Club complete your luxury package!

Ambleside - Wanslea Guest House

Wanslea is situated on the south side of Ambleside five minutes' walk from the lake and six to seven minutes walk from the town centre. All rooms have en-suite bathroom facilities. The standard rooms are very pleasant, but the real gems here are the luxury themed rooms, which far surpass any expectations one may have of the usual bed and breakfast establishment. Indeed, it's a credit to the proprietors that they have had the far-sightedness to move into luxury hotel territory with king sized beds, wide screen TVs, and spa baths - but at a rate far lower than you would pay in a luxury hotel! It's no surprise, then, to find that Wanslea is AA four star rated, an accolade of which it is well deserving.

Ambleside - Lyndale Guest House

Lyndale Guest House is one of the traditionally warm and welcoming B&B's that you find in the Lakes, where a relaxed atmosphere and a friendly welcome combine to produce outstanding hospitality. The house has six bedrooms which offer multiple possibilities of rooms for individuals or groups. Lyndale is only a few minutes' walk from Waterhead where you can catch the steamers, and it's right on the doorstep of Ambleside, if you prefer to visit the town. The breakfasts are excellent, with a choice of the traditional Cumbrian or a healthier alternative, and Alison and Alan will do all they can to meet your requirements. Pets are accommodated, and the house has the convenience of an on-line room availability check and booking system.

Ambleside - 2 Cambridge Villas

2 Cambridge Villas is a stately Lakeland house of character built in the late nineteenth century of Lakeland stone, centrally located in the charming village of Ambleside. But this residence is more that just a traditional house. Proprietors Bridget and Charlie give you a warm welcome into their own home. The accommodation has recently been refurbished and is most comfortable, with an option of en-suite rooms, twins or doubles, with some single rooms.
Bridget and Charlie insist on local produce for their breakfast menu, the traditional English, with an alternative of Continental or vegetarian. One particular feature of the establishment is that it is mountain bike friendly, even providing a pressure washer to remove embedded mud. We don't indulge in mountain biking ourselves, but those who do tell us that nearby is the 10-mile North Face Mountain bike trial, one of the most fearsome in the country.

Ambleside - Broadview Guest House

Broadview is one of those friendly guest houses which can make your stay in the Lakes so much nicer than just "a break". The great hospitality on offer at Broadview, including very comfortable rooms (most have ensuite facilities), and all the different and delicious options that are available for breakfast, will set up up for a great day on the fells or looking round the local attractions. Your hosts Alan and Sue will be happy to tell you about the options for exploring the area. There's also the huge benefit of free local parking, with a permit that also gives you free parking in many other car parks around the South Lakes.
The four stars awarded by the AA are testimony to Alan and Sue's success in creating a superb environment for their guests. Alan and Sue know that many guests wish to have a peaceful stay and therefore welcome families who have older children, couples and friends touring the Lakes. This ensures that the peaceful atmosphere they have created is maintained for guests who like this kind of environment.
There are six rooms, most en-suite or with private bathroom, including doubles, twin and a room that sleeps three people. All rooms have a TV and DVD player, along with full tea and coffee making facilities, a small fridge, bathrobes, fluffy towels, and hairdryer - plus, of course, the little extras that make your stay more comfortable. Best of all, one room has a king sized 4-poster bed, ideal for that special romantic get-away!
Last but not least, for enthusiastic walkers, there are drying facilities, maps, guides and packed lunches available.

Ambleside - Compston House American Bed and Breakfast

Compston House is a most delightful and authentic American guesthouse, hosted by native New Yorkers, Sue and Jerry. It has the true flavour of the States with genuine art deco furnishings of the 1940s era in the guest lounge. The bedrooms are all furnished with an individual theme, named after American states, and are kitted out with all the modern comforts.
Breakfast offers the alternatives of the traditional English or American style complete with home made waffles using an American recipe. All eggs are free range and the ham (bacon) comes from local farms. Travellers arriving by car are assured of free parking.
We are, of course, true Brits and think of everything in the Lakes as very English, but we really enjoyed this out of the ordinary experience, especially the pancakes. If you are American, you will find Compston House a taste of home. If you are not, you'll love this Stateside encounter.

Ambleside - Kingswood Bee and Bee

Kingswood Bee and Bee is an attractive traditional Lakeland house, made into a very comfortable, bright and spacious guesthouse. The atmosphere is warm and friendly, and elegantly decorated with a "Bee and Bee" theme. Proprietors Christine and David tell us that they are apiarists, that is beekeepers to you and me, hence the ubiquitous bees in the surrounding décor. Christine and David have certainly paid a lot of attention to decoration and comfort. The bedrooms are all en-suite and warm and cozy. Breakfast here is the very best. Christine tells us that all eggs are free range and the bacon and sausages are local produce. What is more, Christine grills rather than fries, a healthier alternative, which has our complete approval. Also you must try the homemade honey from Christine and David's own hives. And the tariff is very affordable so you won't get stung by the bill!

Ravenglass - The Coachman's Quarters, Muncaster Castle

In olden times, the coachmen presumably used to sleep here in the company of the horses. How times have changed! Now the stable block is divided into comfortable rooms with every modern convenience including en-suite facilities and television in the rooms. It is hard to believe that this modern accommodation is actually an ancient building, but if you look carefully at the walls, you can discern the old arch brackets, which supported the roof. We are told that horseshoes are embedded in the walls for good luck.
Breakfast is now the full English, served in a bright and cheery breakfast room. Sadly no horses can be admitted but provision is made for the parking of horseless carriages. A great advantage of The Coachman's Quarters is that free admission is given to the castle gardens, well worth seeing, and reduced admission to the castle itself, which is haunted by several ghosts including the legendary jester Tom Fool.

Shap - New Ing Farm

This property was once a working farm and before that a coaching inn. Nowadays, the Lodge provides comfort with style in the Lake District National Park - but the prices are very affordable! The owners tell me that they believe a holiday in the Lake District should offer tranquillity and serenity, as well as a beautiful environment, and who can argue with that? The eastern and northern fells and the Eden Valley are all within easy reach of New Ing, as is historic Shap Abbey and the Rheged Discovery Centre. New Ing is located directly on the Wainwright Coast to Coast Walk, and is just 200 metres from the famous Cumbrian Way, the Westmoreland Way, and the exciting Lakeland Round. Some of the best mountain bike tracks in the UK are located on the doorstep, and the property hires out mountain bikes, though they have many more activities including orienteering, kayaking, wilderness camping and climbing, with the added bonus of bush-craft skills courses! An excellent breakfast is provided, with porridge, the full English breakfast, continental breakfast or a superb range of vegetarian food. Evening meals and packed lunches are available on request. And last but not least, there are dorm rooms with some camping in the grassy paddock at the back of the building. As well as en-suite rooms, the Lodge offers bunkroom beds from £12.50.

Bowness - Blenheim Lodge

The owners, Janz and Robert, treat all their guests as friends, and the welcome is warm and relaxed. Built in 1868 of Lakeland stone, Blenheim Lodge has eleven bedrooms, offering double, single twin, and family accommodation with en-suite/private facilities. Each room is elegantly decorated with Laura Ashley decor and many boast antique and vintage furniture. Ten rooms offer stunning views of Lake Windermere and the mountains beyond, while the other offers wonderful fell views - you might even see the wild deer grazing! All rooms are non-smoking.

Bedrooms - Some of the Gorgeous Bedrooms of Blenheim Lodge
The Langdale (pictured) features a romantic George IV four-poster bed with a five foot king-size bed and a very comfy mattress. The room's huge triple floor to ceiling bay windows offer fantastic views of the Lake and mountains around Bowness. The Fairfield offers a delightful shower en-suite, graceful Louis furniture, and an extremely comfortable king-sized five foot bed. An antique daybed set in the enormous bay windows offers a relaxing way to enjoy the ever changing face of the northern waters of Lake Windermere (pictured). The Dalesway is a romantic French boudoir-style room, with a small shower en-suite, and a fabulous Louis XV double bed, with bay windows overlooking gorgeous countryside, which creates a wonderful 'away from it all' feeling. There are equally well-appointed small but perfectly formed ground floor rooms. You can see photos of all the rooms and their views on Blenheim Lodge's website: www.blenheim-lodge.com

An Ideal Location - and an Excellent Breakfast!
Blenheim Lodge is ideal for a relaxing break. Though peaceful, it's only 2-5 minutes' walk from all the attractions and facilities of Bowness; and the Lake is only 5 minutes' walk away. But best of all, perhaps, is the complimentary membership at a nearby private leisure club, with free use of the pool, sauna, jacuzzi, steam room, and gym, as well as other luxury facilities including beauty and massage treatments which guests can book and purchase themselves. If you want a more active holiday, the Dales Way walk ends just a minute's walk from the front door. What's more, there are 3 spectacular panoramic viewpoints a mere 20 to 40 minutes' walk from the house. The thoughtful owners cater for all tastes: a welcome mug of tea or coffee for tired walkers, two free WAADA fishing permits for the local area, taps outside for washing boots, a handy drying room for damp footwear, clothes and outdoor jackets, and private parking for motorbikes and bikes. If you're into golf, fishing, walking, or sightseeing, ask Janz and Robert to help organize a round of golf, guided fishing or country walks, or sightseeing tours that will pick you up from the Lodge and return you when the day is over. It's all part of the service! As you'd expect, the breakfast menu offers both meat and vegetarian options, all very high quality local food, including handmade sausages and hand cut bacon. The milk and eggs are of the highest quality, and all croissants are oven fresh every day.

A Quality Experience
All of this adds up to friendly and high quality service with an extra personal touch. Comfort is to the fore here, with very reasonable prices for this standard of accommodation. Finally, if you're celebrating a special occasion, Janz will arrange flowers, wine, champagne and luxury handmade chocolate truffles in your room for your arrival. Previous guests' enthusiastic testimonials on the website can be summed up in the phrase: "Come as guests; return as friends."

Keswick - The Grange

The Grange Guest House, Keswick, offers fine quality bed and breakfast accommodation on the outskirts of the lovely market town of Keswick. Since the property was awarded 5 Star Guest House status by both Visit Britain and the AA in August 2010, you can be assured that your stay will be more than comfortable, and you'll be well looked after by Mark and Sally and the whole team.
The wonderful views and location of the Grange, together with the quality of facilities and welcome at this traditional B&B, have attracted returning guests for many years. There are many facilities which you would expect in a 4 star hotel: ample off-street parking, a superb freshly prepared Cumbrian breakfast, free 24hour wifi access, a comfortable lounge, and a scenic outdoor terrace. And the house is fully licensed - which makes the prospect of a cold beer or bottle of wine drunk to the sight of the setting sun behind the fells rather delightful after a long day's walking! There's also a lovely lounge in which you can settle down to read or play chess and other games including backgammon.
The bedrooms are spacious and tasteful, beautifully decorated, each furnished with quality bedding and flat screen televisions with digital channels. You can choose from a selection of fair trade drinks in your room, with mineral water and high quality toiletries provided with the owners' compliments. The Grange offers a quiet and relaxing break in good company, with the opportunity to take in local walks and sightseeing. Being near to Keswick allows you to enjoy the town in the evening with only a short walk home!
